A Story of The Over-Functioning Executive

“Do you think I should go to the post office right now?

…I don’t know, do you need to go to the post office?

Yes.

…Is now a good time?

Yes.

Slade, why did you feel the need to ask me?

Oh, I know you’ve got a lot going on and I wasn’t sure if you’d need me.”

That story is from 18 years ago, but it never gets old. I was the COO of an internet retail company. Slade was my warehouse manager.

When I started with the company, it was in bad shape…Big on sales and low on profit.

As I dove in to fix the issues, I became entrenched in every nuance of the business. I thought it was necessary, but as it turns out, I was just over-functioning as an executive.  While that may sound great, in actuality what it means is you watch everyone leave the building at 5 p.m. and then you attempt to start your day job.

I didn’t know it at the time, but there’s a better way. Listen to the rest of the story in the upcoming CagedVision Podcast.
