Do You Know What Needs to Be Done First?

What a difference a “?” Makes.

In the classic Abbott and Costello baseball skit, the confusion around the nick names of players “Who,” ‘What,” and “I Don’t Know” became a force for great confusion and laughter.

If you haven’t checked out the skit, you should - it’s funny, really funny.

What is not so funny is when something as important as your number one priority over the next 90 days and your single priority of the year, is unclear.

As it turns out, figuring out who’s on first and WHAT should be first is a pretty big deal.

Like, make or break.

So, what are you doing to make sure that your team is working on first things first.

Use the following 3 tips to help your team determine what should be first:

1. Knowing what we’ve said we MUST accomplish in the next 90 and 365 days - What is the FIRST THING that we need to do in order to be successful?

 

2. Question their first response with the following, "What is the single most important thing that we must do first in order to accomplish this?"

 

3. Test their assumptions by asking:

- What will you be relying on that you MUST have before you get started?
- Who or what will be waiting on you to finish?
- If this were not your first priority, what would be first and why?

We all know that there is a logical sequencing of events. And there usually is, with some flexibility. However, as timeframes tighten, the order of specifics become more important.
